Are You Practicing Sun Safety This Summer? | Solutions Pharmacy

It’s official—it’s plenty hot out there! We’re right smack in the middle of a heated Tennessee summer, and the sun’s rays are particularly intense.

Are you taking care of your skin by practicing sun safety? The team at Solutions Pharmacy wants to offer some tips on how to keep your skin protected this summer so you can enjoy the days of summer—without the burn!

Be Smart in the Sun

Taking good care of your skin in the sun requires a multifaceted approach.

First, do your best to try and avoid being outdoors when the sun’s rays are the most intense, which is usually between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

We know, though, that this isn’t always practical, so if you’re outside during this time, seek shade as much as possible or even bring an umbrella for shelter from the sun.

Second, no matter how sunny or cloudy the sky might seem for the day, always wear sunscreen. Yes, we mean always! The sun’s rays come through even on cloudy days.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply at least every two hours while outdoors, and more often if sweating or swimming—so pretty much all the time in the Tennessee summer!

Finally, don’t forget to protect your eyes while out in the sun. Your skin isn’t the only thing that can burn in the sun. Your eyes can, too.

Wear sunglasses that indicate they protect against at least 99 percent of UVA and UVB light. And want a little extra protection? A broad-brimmed hat can help shield the eyes even more.
